On April 23, 2010, Arizona Governor Janis Brewer (R) signed Senate Bill 1070, the most radical immigration legislation in the United States, effectively permitting racial profiling in the state of Arizona. The law requires police to demand immigration papers from anyone who they have a "reasonable suspicion" is in the country illegally. This blog will chronicle the major events regarding this racist and inhumane law.
We enthusiastically encourage a boycott of the State of Arizona until the law is repealed.

Revenge: CA Tea baggers Warn SF for AZ Boycott

Tea baggers show their stripes every public appearance. Their gatherings are about as diverse as a KKK meeting. If the action on Arizona accomplishes anything, it will remind the extreme right wing of the U.S. who has dominated press coverage this year what an effective protest is.

The passion they are showing for Arizona's racial profiling law demonstrates how fluid their principals really were. With all of the paranoid fantasies of a "police state," implanting microchips, and losing their government, if anything you would think they would be supporting Arizona's assault on American citizens. I would love to see a typical Teabagger's reaction if they were pulled over and asked to produce "papers."

Good luck on your racist boycott of San Francisco. They will get as much support as South Africa did in before dumping Apartheid or Arizona did before accepting Martin Luther King Day.

NYT: Diamondbacks Face Backlash Over Law

The fight over Arizona’s illegal-immigration law came to the sidewalk outside Wrigley Field on Thursday afternoon, in the shadow of a game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Chicago Cubs.

And at least one member of Congress, Representative José E. Serrano, Democrat of New York, was urging Major League Baseball to change the site of the 2011 All-Star Game, now set for Phoenix; Mr. Serrano likened the circumstances to the early 1990s, when the National Football League rescinded an agreement to hold the Super Bowl in Arizona during a period before the state accepted Martin Luther King’s Birthday as a holiday.

...Dozens of protesters waved signs and chanted “Boycott Arizona! Boycott Arizona!”...

Mr. Bicchieri and others here contended that it was reasonable to make the Diamondbacks a boycott target because the team’s ownership had — through contributions to political leaders in Arizona — indirectly supported the immigration law. (READ MORE)

Chinese Americans Join The Protest

"...SB 1070 is harmful to all Americans, both White and of colour. Yet, we aren’t talking about the fact that the second largest group of undocumented immigrants who cross into America along Arizona’s southern border are ethnic Chinese; Asians in Arizona are also very likely to be targeted for racial profiling by Arizona’s state cops when SB 1070 comes into effect this summer. And we certainly aren’t talking about the dangerous precedent that Arizona’s anti-immigrant law will have across the nation, in terms of state’s rights, legalized racial profiling, and privacy issues; yet, it is these consequences that can have dangerous ramifications for all people of colour.

It is for these reasons that progressive and minority communities should be mobilizing in full force against SB 1070..." (READ MORE)

"Most people already know the high profile numbers. The 2011 All-Star Game is currently scheduled to be played in Phoenix, an event that is said to be worth $150 million to Arizona's economy. It is certainly not too late to reschedule this game.

In addition, 15 of Baseball's 30 Major League teams conduct their spring training in Arizona's Cactus League. As of 2011, all 15 of those teams will be within 45 miles of each other in the Phoenix area, and all will be in Maricopa County, home of Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Each of the Cactus League Teams plays roughly a 32 game schedule, half at their home complex. The Cactus League accounts for over $350 in spending into Arizona's economy. While the citizens of Arizona have quite a few reasons to be frustrated by federal immigration policy, the act of legalizing racial profiling can be incredibly threatening to the freedoms of all Americans.

The reason that African Americans may want to support the boycott against the state of Arizona is that if black and brown people are being racially profiled in that state, this can open the door for additional profiling around the nation. Eugene Robinson: Arizona Law Act of Vengence

–via The Washington Post

Eugene Robinson
"Arizona's draconian new immigration law is an abomination -- racist, arbitrary, oppressive, mean-spirited, unjust. About the only hopeful thing that can be said is that the legislation, which Republican Gov. Jan Brewer signed Friday, goes so outrageously far that it may well be unconstitutional..." (READ MORE)

Roger Cohen
"...Even at some distance, it is clear that I am not Mexican, and so you would think that people like me are protected by the Incredible Power of White. But the Arizona law is so bizarre, fueled by anger and a dash of bigotry, that its effect is hard to predict. One thing is certain: Some cops will abuse their power -- such is human nature -- and the Hispanic minority will come to see the police as oppressors. History will repeat itself by moving west -- cactus instead of Spanish moss.

The law may seem absurd, but its harshness is no laughing matter. It has prompted widespread outrage from various politicians and civic leaders. And the Roman Catholic archbishop of Los Angeles, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, has even likened it to "Nazism..."" (READ MORE)

Arizona Immigration Law Will Take Racial Profiling

–via The Los Angeles TImes

Look, it's an illegal, right? Arizona's anti-immigration law looks like it will take racial profiling to work.

"...Did you catch the part about "reasonable suspicion"? How is a cop going to know by sight who is or isn't legal? What about a person will elicit suspicion?

Opponents of the measure argue that the open-ended nature of "reasonable suspicion" will lead to widespread racial profiling of all Latinos. They're probably overstating their case. Something tells me someone who looks like, say, blond Mexican pop singer Paulina Rubio won't be stopped.

The truth is that Mexicans are hard to racially profile. Five hundred years of racial mixture has given many Mexican families a decidedly kaleidoscopic racial quality. To wit: Not everyone with Mexican ancestry shares the same skin color..."

CNN: Will Controversy Cool Arizona Tourism?

"(CNN) -- Millions of visitors flock to Arizona each year to relax in beautiful places like the Grand Canyon, Lake Havasu and the resort town of Sedona, but a political storm is threatening to impact the state's tourism.
Anger in the wake of a new state law -- which requires Arizona police to determine whether people are in the United States legally if there is a reason to suspect they aren't -- has prompted some to call for a boycott of its hospitality industry."

Marko Moulitsas (Daily Kos) On Arizona

Marko Moulitsas Zuñiga is the godfather of the political blog. Moulitsas, the founder of the political must read Daily Kos and a columnist for Newsweek and The Hill, is Greek-Salvadorian from Chicago who served in the Army. The former Republican has become a force in the media and in Democratic politics. As a Hispanic, he has been on fire after the passage of the State of Arizona's immigration law. Markos is artfully articulate and has a clear political scope on issues. The Daily Kos is worth a visit to monitor the Arizona debate.

The Clause That Will Kill Arizona

"There's obviously been much talk about Arizona's new anti-brown law, and how it empowers local law enforcement to racially profile brown people, demanding proof of citizenship that none of us carry around...

...anybody can sue their local government if they believe that the municipality isn't pursuing brown people aggressively enough.

I don't think it's crazy to predict that within one year, a substantial number of municipalities in the state of Arizona will be facing lawsuits by anti-immigration zealots. They'll walk down the street, see a couple of brown youths hanging out on the street corner, and BAM! lawsuit filed.

That's the reason that the Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police opposed the law..." (READ MORE)

Immigration Law Is Definitely Arizona's Prop 187

"Arizona Latinos have gone, literally overnight, from being perhaps the most pro-GOP in the nation, to joining California as the most anti-GOP ones in the nation. This, in a state in which whites are soon to be a minority...

All of that, in a single week, because of a single, hateful law. And don't be surprised if Republicans continue to bleed Latino support in the weeks and months ahead as Latinos start facing increasing harassment because of the law.

That's why Fox News legal analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano thinks the law will kill the Arizona GOP (along with the state as well)..." (READ MORE)

"...There are two ways to fight this law: one is in the courts and the other is through direct action. As for the first, lawyers will be filing lawsuits challenging the law's constitutionality. The latter, direct action, is a call to boycott the state of Arizona.

We express our outrage in the face of this abuse of power. We call for a boycott of all goods and services from Arizona and pledge to avoid tourism in the state as well. Jeb Bush Speaks Against Arizona Law

Of course former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has been married to a Mexican woman, Columba Garnica Gallo, since 1974. His father, former-Vice President George H.W. Bush, famously made a gaffe while talking about his grandchildren from Jeb and Columba calling them "the little brown ones." George W. Bush along with Jeb support comprehensive immigration reform but shied away from pushing it through because the Republican congress threatened to kill it. They are up in arms again about immigration reform on the table now.

POLITICO reports Bush's displeasure with Arizona's law:

""I think it creates unintended consequences," he said in a telephone interview with POLITICO Tuesday. "It's difficult for me to imagine how you're going to enforce this law. It places a significant burden on local law enforcement and you have civil liberties issues that are significant as well.""

Meghan McCain Against Law Her Father Supports

–via The Daily Beast

"I do not support the bill that was signed by Governor Jan Brewer. I believe it gives the state police a license to discriminate, and also, in many ways, violates the civil rights of Arizona residents. Simply put, I think it is a bad law that is missing the bigger picture of what is really going on with illegal immigration. The concept that a law-enforcement official can stop an individual when “reasonable suspicion exists that a person is an alien, who is unlawfully present in the United States” is essentially a license to pull someone over for being Hispanic...Hispanic voters in Arizona have yet another reason to distrust the Republican Party." NYT Reporter Will Not Return To Arizona

"I’m glad I’ve already seen the Grand Canyon.

Because I’m not going back to Arizona as long as it remains a police state, which is what the appalling anti-immigrant bill that Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law last week has turned it into.

What would Arizona’s revered libertarian icon, Barry Goldwater, say about a law that requires the police to demand proof of legal residency from any person with whom they have made “any lawful contact” and about whom they have “reasonable suspicion” that “the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States?” Wasn’t the system of internal passports one of the most distasteful features of life in the Soviet Union and apartheid-era South Africa?"

I know there’s some people in Arizona worried that Obama is acting like Hitler, but could we all agree that there’s nothing more Nazi than saying "Show me your papers?" There’s never been a World War II movie that didn’t include the line "show me your papers." It’s their catchphrase. Every time someone says "show me your papers," Hitler’s family gets a residual check. So heads up, Arizona; that’s fascism. I know, I know, it’s a dry fascism, but it’s still fascism." (SEE VIDEO)

Boycott the Arizona Diamondbacks

via HuffPost and The Progressive by Dave Zirin

"This will be the last column I write about the Arizona Diamondbacks in the foreseeable future. For me, they do not exist. They will continue to not exist in my mind as long as the horribly named "Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act" remains law in Arizona. This law has brought echoes of apartheid to the state...

...Many of us aren't in either the imminent vacation or retirement mode. We do, however, live in baseball cities where the Arizona Diamondbacks comes to play.

When they arrive in my hometown in D.C., my back will be turned, and my television will be off. This is not merely because they happen to be the team from Arizona. The D-backs organization is a primary funder of the state Republican Party, which has been driving the measure through the legislature.

As the official Arizona Diamondbacks boycott call states, "In 2010, the National Republican Senatorial Committee's third highest Contributor was the [executives of the] Arizona Diamondbacks, who gave $121,600; furthermore, they also contributed $129,500, which ranked as the eighteenth highest contribution to the Republican Party Committee." Of the many things that make this country great, its largely positive attitude toward the concept of immigration, unique in the developed world, is right at the top. And the fact that even the frothiest “nativists” are themselves descended from immigrants imparts to their rancor a faintly absurd flavor. Which is not to say, of course, that nativist sentiment cannot be dangerous: Senate Bill 1070—Arizona’s remorselessly tough new law, designed to identify and prosecute illegal immigrants—is a case in point."(READ MORE)

Arizona Illegal Immigration Law

The State of Arizona is about to vote on what is called racial profiling disguised as a new Immigration Law. Most socialized countries accept the fact that people wish to immigrate to their country except for the State of Arizona.

The Law allows the police to stop anyone and profiling people -of Mexican, Hispanic, color or descendents including US citizens on the suspicion of being an illegal alien. The ramifications of this new law would actually legalize the freedoms of anyone visiting Arizona also from any country. This includes people born within the USA, and are legally Americans as they would have to carry identification to prevent being thrown in jail. The law also allows police to stop a van or vehicle if he sees a person of color in the vehicle which is totally against the constitution."(READ MORE)

Greetings friends and allies,
In the wake of the recent adoption into law of SB1070 by the State of Arizona today (04.23.2010), one of the most draconian anti-immigration laws ever in the United States, many people have called for a boycott of the State of Arizona, including southwest Arizona Congressman Raúl Grijalva. Personally, I haven’t been to Arizona in five years and do not plan on going there any time soon. I created this list to give folks/average consumers outside of Arizona a chance to show their disgust with the passage of this racist legislation by boycotting the following, Arizona-based companies.

Cold Stone Creamery. Headquarters: Scottsdale, Arizona
Discount Tire Company. Headquarters: Scottsdale, Arizona
Go Daddy. Headquarters: Scottsdale, Arizona
